Peta-mari Selamputo's Story

Chapter One

Written in collaboration with Xalia

Window-shopping was only interesting for so long. Peta-mari knew this of old, what with little else to do some days, and she knew she was reaching the end of her endurance for the day. Staring into the window of a book store, within which were tempting books which she had no money today to buy and so had not let herself enter, she pondered what to do with the rest of her afternoon before Zabeth returned from Atu with Zamah-aisi and decided that (currently) he wanted her home again.

Turning her tail on the bookstore and its siren's call, Peta-mari turned instead to watch the crowd of strange people. Maybe she'd find a new form to try and squish herself into from among them, that was always interesting. Or maybe there would be a pretty lady she could watch, or strike up a conversation with, or flirt with.

Her eye alighted on a pretty lady, all right: warm, creamy white all the way through, with black and gold horns and a thick mane. She was all leg, svelt and lovely. In fact, she looked quite a bit like Peta-mari, herself. Only in cream.

::Damn,:: she told her sister Natifetti as she came within range of her limited telepathic ability, her mental voice thick with amusement. ::the prettiest thing on four paws out today has to be my sister.::

Natifetti stopped short at the voice in her head and searched for the source of the voice. It wasn't hard to find the dark orange-red dragon in the crowd that looked strikingly like Nafi herself. One brow quirked low, she turned in that direction but didn't move. ::Upset, sister? Surely together we'll be even more likely to attract... attractive attention?:: She smirked and gave her sister a haughty look, much to Peta-mari's delight. She hadn't seen her siblings much since their adoption; none of them really made an effort to find each other again, even those of them who all lived in Star City. Still, there was no way she wouldn't recognize Nati', a kindred spirit in many ways.

Including just who she found "attractive".

::A pair of beauties, attracting more attention?:: she replied, teasingly thoughtful, before sauntering away from the bookstore window to meet her sister. ::It's possible we would.::

::Then what's stopping us? I've certainly got nothing better to do, and could use some diversion in my life!:: Natifetti grinned.

::Nothing at all!:: Peta-mari chuckled, sidling up to her slightly-taller sibling and nibbling an affectionate greeting behind an ear. ::How've you been, Nati'?::

::Bored out of my mind, mostly! And you, sister?::

Peta-mari started walking, keeping pace with Natifetti and resisting the urge to match strides; they'd look like a pair of show-beasts if she tried that! ::Rather less than bored, actually, though I'm out of books today, which is what brings me out to these crowded streets in search of pleasant company.::

::And instead you found me, eh? What a disappointment! But I certainly hope a rectifiable one! What do you have in mind, Peta'?::

::I don't know yet, but I'm sure we'll think of something.:: They were, indeed, attracting some attention, though unfortunately it was mostly from the bucks rather than the does. Now that was disappointing. ::You lost that strange bird who took you in, I see, if just for the afternoon.::

One fellow gave Natifetti a smile he obviously thought was charming, to which she replied with a disapproving look and a "hmph!" for a few more who were watching them appraosingly. Peta-mari impishly ignored them all, while her sister answered, ::Yes, thank goodness! I love her dearly of course, but gracious! There's only so much deviousness a girl can take! I snuck out in search of diversion and I hope I won't be missed too soon!::

::Better that, than a stick in the mud who glares whenever I want to have a little fun,:: Peta-mari confided. ::You would not believe some of the things Zabeth calls me!::

Nati' glanced side-long, and though she batted her lashes innocently, she was grinning widely. ::Nothing you don't deserve I hope, if just a bit more harshly put than you'd like?::

::Poooooossibly,:: Peta-mari drawled. ::Though I heard that I'm not the only one, at least.::

Natifetti let out a brief and slightly startled throaty chuckle-- It is too bad she's my sister, Peta-mari thought regretfully; she'd have to find someone with a laugh like that someday-- before schooling her face into mockingly injured innocence. ::My dear sister, I hope you don't insinuate that I am as 'bad' as you are?::

Two could play at that. ::Why, no, of course not!:: she said, her voice dripping innocence. ::I was of the impression that you were worse!::

Peta-mari shared a laughed as her pale sister shouldered her playfully. ::I'm no hedonist, Peta, but I am a flirt!::

::I know, I know. Because it is so terrible to want a little pleasure in one's life, after all.:: Her own gaze was still amused, countering the supposed solemnity of the statement. ::I was serious about others of us "deserving" some interesting if harshly-put names,:: she added. ::And not just you, my dear.::

::Indeed? You have information about some of our other siblings?::

She nodded. ::My foster-sister-- she's actually some sort of great-aunt, but she acts very young so I simply can't think of her like that-- is very good at picking up rumors, apparently. Do you remember Cor, our brother? The black one?::

::Cor? I think you mean Col, and yes, I remember him a bit.::

::I am so horrible with names,:: Peta-mari sighed, but even that couldn't dim her merriment at the news. ::Yes, Col. He's got himself a brood in one of the public bays. And so does Felittera-- she's in the bay next door!::

::You're kidding me!:: Natifetti replied, her eyes widening in surprise. ::You mean to tell me we have nieces and nephews already?::

::Well, they're still in the egg,:: Peta-mari replied a little smugly, pleased to share something new with her sister, ::but yes. Two sets' worth, and at the same time!::

::Amazing. That might be something to see....::

As Natifetti trailed off, Peta-mari bumped shoulders and folded wings with her again. ::I know which bays they're in,:: she tempted. ::We could do whenever you like.::

::Well, since we haven't gotten any promising looks yet, mind if we head over there now?::

::Sounds like a good idea, to me!:: Peta-mari grinned. ::Come on, let's go find a lift.::
