Description: It is most certainly not the case that all Sythyn are beautiful: case in point, Athanora Ssaarymany. Exceedingly short for her people, built reedy, like a sedentary scholar with a few extra pounds on her frame, she is anything but a graceful mage or powerful warrior, or even a sleek assassin. She is as she looks: a scholar and a technician, with nimble fingers and a nimble mind but not much else. Her features are unremarkable, her face particularly round for the more slender-faced species, with a small nose and smaller mouth, and almost non-existent eyebrows. To compound things, she is possessed of a rather dull and unappealing coloration: leathery skin is of a medium, indeterminate gray, her murky gray eyes half-hidden by thick glasses, her even more murky gray hair, which she wears cut unfashionably short, except for her long clan-braids, which has a decidedly green tint to it.

Athanora is not exactly unattractive, provided one likes gray, but since making herself attractive would take effort, no one has ever seen her bother. Her clothes are comfortable rather than fashionable or flattering, usually old and sometimes even mismatched, and she's just cool enough not to care. The only constants are serviceable gloves, covering up to the elbow, and simple earrings and cuffs on her ears, signifying clan, hive, and family.

Personality: Practical and industrious, Athanora puts up with her future husband's frivolousness largely by ignoring it and filling up her time with work. The marriage was arranged, and likely to be a good one politically and economically, but though Thyravon seems nice enough, Athanora is quite certain she'll want to murder him before long. But, because it's such a good match politically and economically, she has since resolved to deal with it. That, in fact, is how she approaches most problems: she weighs benefits and drawbacks carefully, makes as impartial a decision as possible, and simply resolves to carry out that decision, no matter what. It makes her seem cold and calculating to many, even prickly, but she isn't really cold, and is only sometimes prickly. With those in need of help, protection, or comfort, particularly children, she can very gentle and reassuring.

In addition to being practical and having a strong work ethic, Athanora is also blindingly intelligent. She can take in information at rapid speeds, work it over quickly in her head or on a computer screen, and almost always come up with the correct answer, whether the problem be mathematical, scientific, technological, or theoretical. This intelligence, however, does not apply to social or personal problems, and thus she isn't a particular popular sort of person, being far out of her depth and, thus, not likely to even try if she can get away with it. She is surprisingly good with children, though she doesn't necessarily like them, seeing in them a kind of logic and sense that usually gets lost in adulthood.

History: Athanora's childhood was a quiet one, though a bit unusual: she is the child of her father's second marriage, as his first wife went into the priesthood and had to give up her family. As such, she actually has a sibling, an older brother who, though he loves her dearly and is quite protective of her, managed to collect all of their father's attention himself-- though not for lack of trying to include his chubby, awkward little sister. Her mother had no such difficulties, very much in love with her intelligent daughter, but she had never been particularly healthy, and died when Athanora was thirteen.

Athanora chose her future profession at eighteen, as most of her clan does, though she had known she would be working with technology long before. She hadn't exactly chosen to join a Search team, but once her father arranged a marriage to a Searcher from the Vranabotha family, she decided to take her skills with him on his Search, in the hopes that they might "get to know" each other (read: "get to like each other"). So far, she hasn't gotten much attention from her future husband, and finds she likes his father far more than she likes him.

Abilities: Her strongest talent is that Athanora has an affinity with technology: just about anything mechanical, digital, and technical, she can work with, use, and even fix. Magically, her power isn't particularly strong: she can improve her senses and reflexes, usually to sharpen her vision for working on small items or seeing far in the distance when she doesn't have a gadget to do so, for her; and she can sense magics, emotions, and even bodies which are out of balance enough to be dangerous, though only rarely can she actually do something about them. Physically, as mentioned before, Athanora isn't in the best shape: though she isn't exactly overweight, neither is she particularly svelt or toned, and she has no gross physical skills whatsoever. Smaller-scale, however, she is extremely good with her hands: building machinery, working with wire, picking locks, even art, though she very rarely lets anyone actually see what works of art she produces when she's bored.
