Description: | Though she could not be called beautiful, Rachel is strong-featured with a kind of stubborn attractiveness to her. Sharp, black eyes and thick, curly hair are distinctively Latino in appearance, as is her dark skin. Her body is strongly built, well-curved and well-muscled, her daily workout ingrained into her daily routine from her work on the police force so that she keeps herself in fighting trim despite not having been in the force for several years. Her clothing is almost entirely utilitarian, meant for heavy work of various types, but her preference is a simple t-shirt and comfortably stretched and faded blue jeans. She has a dazzling smile when she cares to show it. |
Personality: | Rachel Ramirez is a very strong-willed woman with a strong personality to go with it. She accepts no nonsense and is a generally serious person, but can unbend if off hours with old friends or with her daughter or dragon. She is very protective, but rarely over-protective, and is old enough to know that sometimes someone needs to make a mistake herself before she can learn from it. Independent to a fault and not really very good with people, Rachel is introverted but not introspective. She is happiest when in motion rather than thinking, doing rather than speculating or planning. |
History: | Ever since she was a little girl, Rachel
wanted to join Star City's police. She worked, she trained, she did
everything she could-- right up to sneaking into private hatchings until
one of the newborn dragons picked her, at age fourteen. It was something
of a scandal, of course, but she and young Beod plowed through it with
their soon to be characteristic boldness.
They did, indeed, end up on the police force, but not in the capacity that Rachel had expected. Their first actual job as anything other than rookies was playing bodyguard to one of the old-class nobles, clinging to the last shreds of the dynastic rule of the station. Rachel was, to say the least, offended by the position and simply didn't take it seriously-- up until the first assassination attempt, that is. The overthrow of the station was not a peaceful one, and as her new protectee Cedric Falken carefully walked both sides of the political fence in order to keep in the good graces of as many as possible, he also made a good number of people quite unhappy with him, as well. Once she had that driven home to her, she took the position with a little less disgust and a little more attention. It didn't hurt that the man was not only infernally attractive, but gentlemanly and charismatic, as well. It was almost a foregone conclusion, in the midst of all the chaos and stress, that they ended up lovers. Things started to settle down, somewhat, when the last of the dynasty finally fell. Cedric was given the position of Public Minister, for his many contacts and knowledge of the networks within the station's population, economic, political, and social. Rachel, quite to her surprise and even dismay, ended up in the position of wife instead of bodyguard and back-door girlfriend. Cedric was insistent that their relationship be legitimate, and the last straw was when she discovered she was pregnant. The wedding was a surprise to many, and little Deborah even more so. Rachel never felt comfortable in the role of a Minister's wife. The social occasions, the politics, the posing and preening, all of it felt false and wrong to her, and when Cedric naively tried to make her fit the image of a perfect socialite lady, she always ended up rebelling, getting as grungy, macho, and often rude as she could manage within the boundaries of a wealthy politician's wife. After six years of arguing, she finally left him with an official divorce and went back to the police force; Beod wisely refrained from saying "I told you so", for he'd never been for the marriage to begin with-- Cedric, yes; formality, no. She had another eight years of service before Beod lost his leg and damaged his lower spine in a foray on the surface of Atu, helping to beat sand beasts. Her insurance could only cover a very cheap replacement limb and general medical attention, so he really wasn't fit for active duty anymore. Since she wasn't about to continue without him, her partner of so many years, Rachel retired and they both found themselves low-level jobs that take care of the bills. Though she'd never go back to him, Rachel thinks of Cedric fondly; if they had been in a different situation, she thinks it might have worked, but as it is, it would never work out. So, she keeps away from him as much as possible. She loves her daughter dearly, and ever since Cedric got full custody when Deborah was eight she has been rather bitter about having to live apart from her. It makes it easier to not see the girl's father, at least. Deborah comes to visit when she can, which is more often now that she's older, and as long as they don't talk about men or Deborah's night-shift activities, they get along wonderfully. |
