Personality: Koaekaeala tends to be a solitary, quiet enkeyn, preferring his own company or the company of so-called dumb beasts to large groups, though he gets along surprisingly well in large groups when it is required of him. He has no actual fear or difficulties with group living, crowds, or cooperation: he simply prefers not to have to. No one would catch him being rude, as he is unfailingly polite, and he carries himself with dignity and even nobility. One might expect him to be sensitive about his disability, and he is to an extent, but he keeps it to himself. Anyone insulting his lack of flight ability will simply be ignored, and he is such a serious soul that anyone trying to make a joke of it in a misguided attempt to make him crack a smile usually just receives a blank stare.

Though his past and present condition give him sympathy with the misunderstood, underestimated, and particularly the handicapped, Koaekaeala would offer support and aid but then move on, rather than making a friend or staying around. Not only is he restless, always seeking something new, he is intensely private. The very thought of someone prying into his personal affairs without permission offends him. Also, he isn't entirely sure how to be a friend, as he hasn't had much experience, so he simply does not complicate his life with them, now.

History: For the first several years of his life, Koae was treated like a cripple-- after all, he could not fly, the way the rest of his tribe could. His parents died when he was still very young, and he had no siblings, so he wasn't even part of a family, throwing him onto the mercy of the tribe. He had no magic to make up for his deficiency, and he was not much use except to look after flightless young, guard the sleeping when they were temporarily grounded, and drive prey from the ground. He was pitied, and cared for, but he was never really respected or appreciated. As he had few real friends who would see him as more than a handicap, he withdrew into himself, becoming a very quiet and solitary enkeyn, taking pleasure in his nonjudgmental surroundings, instead.

Perhaps in retaliation, Koae set about proving his reputation as useless wrong, When his parents died, he left the tribe-- and even the plains-- and found Kenist Miana, where all types were welcome and made useful. His love of nature and its myriad shapes, as well as his dislike of being trapped indoors and underground all the time, led him to take up the position of explorer, seeking out new and interesting locales for enkeyn settlement. Recently, that position has led him offworld, as well, with charms that can teleport him to set, known locations on other planets, from which he can explore and chart out new locations.

Wherever he goes, Koae always has a piece of "home" with him, as a reminder of who he is, where he comes from, and what made him what he is today. On his right horn, in the tradition of the enkeyn plains tribes, he wears a pair of feather ornaments, one with a feather from his father's wing and the other from his mother's.
