Summary

Part One

A lot happens over the next five or so years! So much, in fact, that the author does not have time to write it all out. Hence, in order to move this and many other plots along-- or, at least, to catch this story up with the other characters involved, owned by the author or owned by other writers-- the readers get a summary!

When we left Riyikith, Evola, and Evoli, it was the Earth-year 2562 and Riyikith was making friends with tree-shaped daemons and totally oblivious to Evola's crush on him, Evola was in the midst of her first season of heat and hating it, and Evoli was off-world on Mythicalae standing for a hatching. First and foremost, Evoli not only bonded, he double-bonded, proving that he was, indeed, bonding material. He stayed on Mythicalae with his pair, Evizo and Evoizo respectively, for training for both of them and himself, for the next year and a half, visiting only occasionally.

Back at home, the last of the UNIS cadets bond and classes continue for the bonded pair, as does Riya's job and his friendship with the tree-daemons. The latter results in Riyikith learning about a free-standing portal deep in the woods, currently not in use and hidden by the tree-daemons. He was well-known enough in the clan, after a year, that when he petitions that the portal be directed towards Mars, his own homeworld, his request is at least considered. His bargaining chip is simple: they get to colonize Mars, which would be a perfect environment for their clan, rich with CO2 and other non-oxygenic compounds that the living trees-- and they would, consequently, produce oxygen to make the planet eventually habitable. His reasons are less simple, but mostly focus on a desire to see his father the leader of the Martian rebellion, reassure him he was all right and alive, and see if he could do anything from Avengaea to help the cause. After a season of debate-- the tree daemon clan is, after all, rather slow in such things, being more plant than animal-- the clan agrees to shift the portal's destination, and work begins.

Another year passes, during which Riyikith manages to get the coin to afford to inscribe the back of his bracelet with a pentagram spell to activate the portal, before the portal is completed and activated for the first time in the spring of 2564. It opens to the largest underground living space Riyikith knew of that was known only to the resistance movement, and fairly private so that the trees could escape to the surface: a hanger bay with a faulty surface terminal that doesn't open and shut properly, but that no one really ever has the time to fix. He goes through first, protected by a spell from the leaking atmosphere, to find his father. Their meeting isn't exactly what he'd hoped it would be-- but then, Riyikith muses, he has never really managed to live up to Malagai Kethron's expectations of him.

Riya promises to return regularly-- once a month-- for updates and reports, but he is reluctant to actually spy on the other bonded pairs: a couple of them might not like him, but they're not really bad people, and they don't seem particularly interested in attacking Mars, anyway. In fact, the future is rarely spoken of among them, it seems, and when it is, it is distant and either of returning home at the end of term to see family, or somehow staying on Avengaea after their term of service to live there. None of them so much as mention Mars, though a couple talk about fighting demons now and then. In the meantime, daemons start slipping through the portal and broken hatchway to colonize Mars, and Evoli and his bonds come home in the summer of 2564.

Moderate disaster strikes in the spring of 2565: while returning from Mars and a report to Malagai, in which he really had little to say, Riya is attacked by demons! He escapes, with the help of first Evola, who had gone with him and is nearly full grown, and then Evoli, when his bonds shows up to chase the demons away: no demon in his or her right mind, or even a small pack of demons, would willingly stand up to two massive Geperna dragons! Riyikith is, however, hurt in the mini-battle, and the only person Evola can think of to call for help is her best friend from old, Cemitae, who brings Andy along with him.

After an unsuccessful attempt at not talking about it, and a subsequently even less successful attempt at lying, Andy and Cemitae learn the truth about Riya: who he is, who his father is, how he got involved to begin with, everything. The cadet also learns that though Riyikith was never, and would never be, on the side of the UNIS government, neither did he totally support the Martian rebellion. Learning about the daemons settling-- and thus starting to change-- Mars is a surprise, as well, given most Martians hate the idea of altering the planet's surface in any way.

Riyikith knows that, even once he's healed, he can't go back through the portal, so he has the daemons deactivate it so that the demons can't use it, themselves, at least until the area can be protected. A large group of tree-daemon colonists have already gone through and settled in a Martian mountain range, however, so at least they have gotten a fair share of their part of the bargain. And, armed with his knew knowledge, Andy loyal and yet confused cadet that he is, goes straight to Captain Mullen who, surprising to Andy, already knew exactly who Riya is! He'd known almost ever since the youth was chosen to come to Avengaea with them, and saw no malice or harm in him, so hadn't told anyone. Under his captain's advice, Andy also decides not to tell anyone.

That resolve lasts a whole year, until spring of 2566, when the dragons are all finally considered full grown-- or at least full grown enough to become fully useful members of the UNIS army. At that point, the army gathers the cadets and Riya together, sans dragons, and gives them the address Riya had been dreading ever since he was brought into the whole operation: their future and plans for their use on Mars to quell the rebellion. The cadets-- with the sole exception of Andy, because of his inside knowledge-- are surprised, even stunned, though Riya himself can't imagine how they didn't expect it.

When they are all released from the meeting to start packing for their departure, the whole group-- dragons this time included-- finds Mullen and, after a long conference, learns not only about their captain's stance on the whole Martian operation, and about how poorly their dragons would fare on a completely magicless planet, but also who Riya is. A couple cadets-- particularly Keren and Adara-- are furious at the deception, but the rest are just surprised. Riya adds that the point of Martian reconstruction will soon become a moot point, anyway, since the tree daemons are by now working on another portal to Mars to continue their colonization. The combination of pacifistic dragons, insider information, a reluctance to actually go to battle somewhere else when they were needed more on Avengaea, and the likelihood that the dragons wouldn't last very long on Mars, anyway, results in the whole cadet bunch, and Captain Mullen, defecting. They escape the military base and go into hiding among the Avengaean population, who of course aren't going to betray them, since they, or a number of them, are quite likely to help against the demons.

UNIS, of course, takes action to try and find them, during which Riyikith meets up with an old friend: Yoko, the only one of the Specials who actually had been kind to him, early on. She promises to keep his secret, where he and the other cadets are, but she does come back to see him... fairly often. They form up a friendship, and more-- after all, Riya is still oblivious to Evola's feelings for him, which have only grown in all this time. He might well have noticed them subconsciously, however, because he never does tell her about Yoko, until she finds out completely on accident-- and the worst fight of their bonding, to date, ensues. Yoko flees, Evola refuses to speak to Riyikith for days, and Riya is largely just confused.

Shortly after this, the group as a whole moves into the Avengaean Nidus, after stealthily crossing the bulk of the continent in small groups-- their bonding groups: Riya with Andy, to Andy's mild annoyance; Keren with Adara; Franco and Jason; and Michael and Jed. Evoli, of course, has lived there ever since bonding his pair, who were so huge they needed a larger dwelling than those Sanctuary offered, much less those UNIS offered! Everyone settles in there

That autumn, 2566, Evola goes off-world for the Victory Dance, a multi-dragon mating flight in celebration of the end of the Tris'Hathian war-- without telling Riyikith, to spite him for finding a girlfriend. The discomfort of being fully egg-gravid, which is very unpleasant for Avengaeans, bridges their fight. It isn't until spring of the next year, though, that Riya finds out about, accepts, and returns her affections, and even then he only finds out because, at the news that his father on Mars was killed in a minor skirmish, he is so devastated.

That is where plots currently stand, though more will surely be added later!
