Description: | Though Lant'ien looks basically human, even
a first glance shows different ancestry somewhere in his family tree.
Remarkably short, even for his age, Lant'ien is thin and small, light of
build and seemingly on the verge of being unhealthy. His skin, not a
pink, peach, or even brown color, is dark, ashy gray, and even that
looks like it should be a darker shade. If someone with dark gray
skin can be described as too pale, Lant'ien could be. His hair is stark
white, curley, and usually long and tangled; very rarely does he make an
effort to untangle and confine the curls. Slightly pointed, angled ears
poke from the shag, the most obvious sign of alien heritage other than
his skin color. Even more odd, though, are his eyes: stark black, with
no whites or irises or even discernable pupils-- just nothing at all but
blackness.
Lant'ien wears plain, simple clothes, somewhat old-fashioned in the style of his homeworld. Usually his clothes are in shades of gray or white, giving him a uniform, monochrome sort of appearance, with the occasional red, blue, or violet thrown in. Any trimmings, accents, or accessories are always in gold. He is never seen without at least one book, usually more, or his guardian, Bausalu wen Delanau. |
Personality: | Trying to find Lant'ien's personality can
be difficult, if you don't spend a lot of time with him. At first
glance, he is subdued, quiet, and distracted-seeming, usually with his
nose in a book or three-- usually all at once, as if he reads a sentence
from each before starting over to continue reading the next sentence in
each, and somehow keeps each book straight. His eyes, shaded by tangled
hair, stay focused anywhere but on someone else's face, much less eyes,
no matter whether he's supposed to be talking to them or not-- but then,
it's difficult to guess just where his eyes are focused, to begin with.
Most of Lant'ien's standoffishness, silence, and avoidance are simply surface emotions. He is much more intense than a casual acquaintance would give him credit for, far more mature and intelligent than the vast majority of fourteen-year-old boys, and it would probably be accurate to say he is older than his years. Given the state of his life and his magic, he could easily have slipped into apathy and lethargy, but instead he focuses fiercely on the world around him-- the inanimate parts, anyway. People of any kind, with their spark of life, are difficult for him to be around; mages are even worse, for his bound magic is still there, and it still itches to feed on the power of others, even if he can't let it do so. The only people he feels comfortable around are those who can keep the sense of their life and power contained within themselves, those without even the barest hint or magic, or androids. Lant'ien spends most of his time in books or, more recently, tinkering around with metal and computer parts. He is surprisingly learned for a boy of his age, due to his habit of reading multiple books at once, and has long since passed beyond the requirements of conventional schooling. He likes the idea of someday working in robotics, or even the creation of androids, for androids, at least, do not have life or magic. For now, though, he just tinkers, not often leaving his room or seeing people. |
History: | Not much of Lant'ien's history is general
knowledge to anyone not of his homeworld-- and even most from
there. Gifted with rare and dangerous abilities, Lant'ien and his
sister, Kyipa, could not be allowed to remain free and in possession of
their power. Born and trained for the purpose of containing dangerous
magics, each was assigned a bodyguard and binder. The two were
separated, because though Lant'ien would never purposefully harm anyone
while magically bound, Ky'ipa, older and more cunning, had ambition to
spare. First, within the city they were raised in, then on opposite
sides of the continent-- then, finally, to different places within the
Nexus' universe.
Lant'ien and his binder and guardian, Bausalu wen Delanau, ended up on Star city. Unlike his troublesome sister, Lant'ien was bound voluntarily, a willing magical prisoner and very close to his guardian. His magic frightens him, as it would anyone actually possessing it and a full set of wits, and when it was bound, he could try to live like a normal person. It was, to say the least, difficult to live within the total binding his power requires, but he considered it better than living without it-- particularly after that binding was gone. Ky'ipa Ruvuah managed to escape her own binding with the help of three xenodragons, including a young an inexperienced queen. She took the trio to Star City in search of her brother, to free him as she had been freed, only without his desire or consent. She killed his binder and guardian, but then had to flee before his grief and his own released power, leaving him in the charge of his body guard, Rumi Beotoli. It was her idea to bond him to a dragon, hopefully a magical one who could help him take control of his power. It didn't quite work as expected... but at least it worked. |
Magic: | Lant'ien's magic is not exactly "magic". It is, instead, closer to magic's polar opposite, in a sense: utter nothingness. A conventional term used among his people translates as "unmagic". He can work nothingness as if it were energy and use it for various purposes: hiding, catching, transportation, poisoning, deactivating other magics, even killing. Unmagic itself is destructive to living beings and other types of magic, eating away at its opposite, and it is next to impossible to detect, unless one is looking for unmagic itself-- and because of its rarity, few know to look for it. However, most of the time Lant'ien cannot use this unmagic: for his own sanity and the safety of the people and powers around him, he has given himself over to being magically bound and constantly watched over by one of his own people, raised for just such a purpose. If his power ever broke free, he could be very dangerous, and he knows it-- so he does everything he can to make sure it won't break free. |
