Description: | Bonding has been good for Jal, if only in that now he is clean more often then not, he wears clothes that aren't more patch and hole than fabric, and he doesn't look starving. He is still small and very bony, and he has yet to loose his sharp cheekbones and the look in his eyes that weighs everything he sees for value, nutritional value, or both. At least there isn't nearly as much dirt darkening already dark brown skin, and his black eyes are a little more relaxed than when he lived all the time on the streets, though they are still wary and generally untrusting. Black hair, still tangled despite actually having a home now, falls to his shoulder-blades, mostly done up into dredlocks, a few of which are wrapped in mostly-dead lumiglow wires he has scavenged from the garbage before it gets transported from the station. |
Personality: | Jal is as all street-dwelling children must be:
quick, quiet, resourceful, and brave. He is normally quite quiet and
avoidant of people older and stronger than him-- a survival technique that
is more of a mask than anything else-- but is quite bold, sometimes to the
point of bullying, with children the same age or younger. Even so, he is
very protective of those he deems "his", though they are few and far
between, and usually people in need of that protection. Those few include
his mother, though there isn't often anything he can do to help her. He
thinks of himself as "tough", but really is just a lonely little boy with
far too much resting on his thin shoulders.
Soon before his accidental bonding, though, Jal did manage to make himself one friend: a rich friend. That did wonders for improving his outlook on life. Having a dragon-bond has made him positively optimistic, though he is still rebellious and independent, and still generally quiet enough to be overlooked. Now, though, older and more accustomed to having someone to watch his back, he is more adventurous, and an accomplished liar and actor. |
History: | Jal spent his first year and a half with a
home, but he doesn't remember it. All he remembers now are the artificial
streets of the Star City station, rummaging through trash for food,
escaping bullies by running as fast as he can, helping his mother steal
drinks, and sleeping on exhaust grates for warmth or, once in a while, in
the station's shelter. He doesn't understand most of what he sees,
thinking that it's only natural to climb over drunks on his way to find
breakfast, chase rats or the occasional wild flit in case he might be able
to catch and cook one, and flee the child-hunters and older boys. His
mother can't protect him-- more often than not, he's the one who tries to
protect her while she's passed out drunk or drugged-- so he's learned to
look after himself.
Jal started up an unlikely friendship not long ago with an upper-middle-class dragoner's daughter, Shanna Lecava. In fact, given that the friendship began with Jal stealing Shanna's purse and leading her on a wild chase through the alleys of the residential decks, that they ever became friendly at all was something of a miracle. Even so, when she proudly told him that she was going to be standing at an off-world dragoner's clutch, he promised he'd find a way to watch, even though, being an obvious street-rat, the officials would likely throw him out if they found him. So, he found a hiding spot-- a, excellent one, if he did say so himself-- in a ventilation shaft above the second bay. She wouldn't be able to see him, but he could see her, and everything else, just fine. It was completely unplanned, and completely unexpected, that someone found Jal in his hiding place. Even more unexpected was that it was one of the hatchlings who found him. Mossei bonded him, even from the floor of the hatching bay, and as far as Jal is concerned, it was the best thing that could have happened to him. The only real hurdle now is figuring out how he's going to feed and house his new friend, when he doesn't have food or housing for himself, but he's pretty much leaving that up to the station officials, who have a somewhat exasperating case on their hands and who have given him, his mother, and Mossei temporary dwelling among the other new dragoners-- so far, for free. |
