Description: | Ryruraan is positively tiny for a sythyn,
though she is relatively tall for her father's kind, and she bears the
frailty of body of both. She is wraith-like in appearance, with skin as
soft as an elf's despite the sythyn coloring. Her ears are even more
pronounced and fluted than others of her kind, and her eyes large and
soulfully dark. Her features are delicate and pointed, her face long and
gracefully planed, and usually void of expression. What expression she
does give flickers briefly and lightly across her features, taking long
acquaintance to be able to read her well. She wears many shades of blue,
violet, and red, but rarely anything brighter, and she rarely shows much
skin except on her face.
Though she was raised largely among her father's people, she follows some traditions of the sythyn, such as wearing cuffs and studs in her ears to show her clan affiliation, and rarely going without protective gloves over her long, slender fingers. However, that only manages to highlight that she has an odd number of fingers and toes, heritage of her father: on each appendage she has three fingers and a thumb, rather than the usual sythyn four and a thumb. To her, this seems normal; to others, it seems strange. |
Personality: | Though she is solemn and serious, for the
most part, Ryruraan is very open-minded and accepting of the differences
of others. She is totally at peace with herself, lacking the sense of
incompleteness that many half-blooded sythyn are prone to, and is
completely self-possessed, as well. To others, she seems withdrawn and
aloof-- in fact, she can be, particularly towards those who wear their
feelings openly and feel them passionately-- but she is as complex in
personality as she is in mind. Despite her somewhat lofty aura, at times
there is something completely earthy in her face, a flicker of the feral
behind her eyes, which can and has disturbed others before.
Ryruraan is drawn to the odd, the different, and the shunned, particularly those with complex minds or emotions. Though she will sometimes be drawn to help with her powers or just her supportive presence and incredible patience, she sometimes merely sits and basks quietly in the oddness of another's mind, perhaps starting up a conversation, perhaps not, usually depending upon who she has found. Sometimes this attraction forms into friendships, sometimes it is merely a passing fascination; the most long-lasting of those friendships, that with the equally quiet Nonaarama, seems to be turning into love, but whether this is a lasting commitment is anyone's guess. |
History: | Ryruraan grew up being called Darkling by
her father, who did not understand the name her mother insisted on
calling her by, and Ryruraan by her mother, who had named her in the
language of her own people. Her mother disappeared, and was presumed
dead, when she was just barely adult, but she was one of those sythyn
half-bloods who was happy on her non-sythyn parent's world, despite
whatever problems she had by being different. She used her powers to
protect home and holt, and if she sometimes needed help now and then
with them, or caused the occasional accident, her tribe understood and
forgave her, and her father still loved her. Things changed little when
her father Tumble died, because the rest of the tribe was her family as
much as he was.
It wasn't until she was almost fifty years old-- not an elder by the standards of either of her peoples-- that the Searchers found her and took her away. Some Searcher teams don't worry much about whether their Searched are actually happy on their current world or not, and bring them back to Llyr aRraanor if they show signs of not fitting in, in their current world. It was one of those teams which found Ryruraan-- and on a particularly bad day, too-- and one of those teams which whisked her away before she could so much as collect herself to protest. For three years Ryruraan has lived on Llyr aRraanor, and for most of that time she has thought of little except how to get home. A few of her tribe have been in sporadic contact with her, magically, but that hasn't seemed like enough. When she found out about the first ever Searched Searcher team, her first thought was a way to get home, and she jumped at the opportunity. Now that she is actually in space with them, however, she isn't so sure she can leave when they come to her former home-- not if it means leaving them, as well. |
Abilities: | Magically, Ryruraan possesses powerful
mental magic of all kinds: she can mimic anything a psionic can do, from
telepathy to telekinetics to minor metabolic powers, even to the occasional
display of pyrokinetics, only through
an effort of magic as much as of the mind. This can make some people
difficult to be around, for her, though it draws her to others. She is
particularly adept at mental illusions and forced-trance states. There
have been times when she has caught people in mental traps or mazes--
quite literally-- out of defense, fear, and once or twice true malice.
While practicing such illusions, or operating them for another, she has
even before managed to lose herself in her own mind, and had to be
fetched out by a psionic or another with mind-magic.
Non-magically, Ryruraan is very intelligent-- which is not surprising-- and has an excellent memory and organized mind. She knows much about natural healing, and keeps a wide array of herbs, bandages, and medical chemicals on hand, as her mismatched group's healer. |
