Description: | Though short, Yoko is not particularly small. She isn't your typical willowy, slender Japanese woman; rather, she is somewhat blocky, build up thick with muscle rather than fat, with powerful legs and arms. To be blunt, she looks like a physical fighter in body, the opposite of what a proper young lady of the islands should attain to be. She is not unlovely, though, moving with the grace of a fighter, wearing an oval face framed by straight, blue-black hair cut to just below her chin and bearing a delicate, Asian nose; a small, flowerbud mouth; and sharply angled, black eyes. Most of the time she wears serviceable trousers and t-shirts, when not in uniform, but she does have a special place in her bags for her kimono. |
Personality: | Yoko is generally a kind, thoughtful young woman, if a little on the perfectionistic, low-self-esteem side. Though in many things Yoko is courageous, there are some things of which she is terrified. Dogs, and by exponential extension Avengaean demons, are one thing, and new people are another. She is at times painfully shy and even more painfully polite, raised by as traditional a Japanese family as there is on Earth by the 2500s, and very rarely meets the eyes of a superior or stranger, believing it rude. She has a definite melodramatic tendency, over-reacting to things that others might take in stride, but she thinks are the end of her life. She prefers working with machinery to working with people she doesn't know, and loves hand-to-hand or archaic weapons combat. If the SCA still existed, she would gladly take part-- which makes the existence of Avengaea and her fairly recent transfer there almost perfect. Now, if only there weren't any demons there.... |
History: | Yoko was one of the original nine cadets to
be discovered as psionics at a UNIS training facility in Rome, a gift
which let her into a special training program for the Avengaean Bonding
Project. From a strict Japanese family, she wanted to bring honor to
them through her success-- but instead, an old fear brought her failure.
She made it almost a month into the training program before her phobia
of dogs resurged, magnified, by a 3D simulation of the canine demons
from the world of Avengaea. Unable to cope with fighting giant,
intelligent dogs, even simulations of them, she was forced to leave the
program.
Yoko was devastated. She'd finally found a way to make her family proud, and she'd failed. Not only had she failed, she had failed because she was afraid. Before she could go the way of many Japanese before her and kill herself-- or at least try to-- to make up for her shame-- and avoid having to tell her family of her failure and endure their disappointment-- her captain decided she should be transferred to another division, one which would have no contact with the feared demons. Someone with her telepathic range, after all, should not be wasted. So, ever since, Yoko has trained for flying helicopters, mostly Earth-side but every once in a while Aven-side. She loves her job, getting to fly, to work with machines, to finally succeed at something; the only drawback is the lack of action, for though she is afraid of the demons, humans or humanoids don't scare her a bit. However, she is quite certain she can deal with that, as long as she gets to fly and doesn't run into any demons; she just practices alone or with a friend in her off-hours, hand-to-hand or with her glaive. Only a year and a half ago, though, one of the permanent Aven-side pilots resigned, leaving an open spot. Yoko was the best person for the position, so she was assigned to Avengaea permanently. Six months later she realized that Riya Keth-- really Riyikith Kethron-- was planet-side, too. She never really knew him well, but he was nice to her, and certainly cute, so when she ran into him at the base, she accepted his invitation to do lunch and catch up. One thing led to another and, after a few months, he found his way into her bed. It was a pleasant relationship-- or, it was until his bond Evola found out. After that, things got uncomfortable, then rocky, and finally broken off. Yoko understood, and, somehow or another, she and Riya have been friends since. Yoko has come to stand as a candidate at the results of the Victory Dance at Riya and Evola's request. Evola, who hadn't exactly thought through the consequences of her spite-fling in the Dance itself and who was by now desperate for candidates to adopt her three offspring, actually invited Yoko, in the hopes that it would make up for "stealing" her boyfriend if she bonded one of her own children. Yoko has no protest; since she is as enamored with dragons as she is afraid of demons, being denied the chance to bond on Avengaea was something of a disappointment, and this just might make up for it. |
