Description: | Though he is mostly human in facial and
body structure, no one could possibly mistake Kienn for a human. For one
thing, rather than a human shade of peach or pink, Kienn is mainly a
bright, grass green in color, marked here and there with black and
white-- such as the raccoon-like mask across his face or the spot of
black on the end of his nose. For another, he is not smooth-skinned, as
humans are, but rather covered in a soft layer of fur. Aside from those
very obvious differences, other things mark him as largely daemon in
appearance. His ears, for example, are long and limp, hanging down
nearly to his shoulder-blades; as if in defiance of this often-annoying
trait, he wears his white-blond hair very short. Also annoyingly, for it
makes getting dressed a pain sometimes, he sports a pair of impressive,
velvety-furred antlers, much like those of a stag in its prime. Less
annoying, but every bit as noticeable, is his tail: long, ringed in
green, black, and white, and slightly fluffy, it is still fairly useful
as it is surprisingly dexterous and has the capability of grasping
objects.
Because of the antlers and tail, and his digitrade feet, coupled with particularly unusual taste, Kienn ends up wearing some rather odd sets of clothes: ones that do not require pulling over his head and which have room for the tail in the back. Whatever the style, however, his clothes are invariably shades of black or gray, with once in a while a brown or a dull green thrown in; he is colorful enough, he figures, without having clothes to augment his embarrassing brightness. His only accessory, if it can be called that, is a pair of very thick, silver-wire spectacles that perch on his nose without the aid of ear-pieces, which would probably never fit around his ears, anyway. How they remain in place is something of a mystery. |
Personality: | Most people would probably call Kienn a jerk: he is bitter, proud, ambitious, and stubborn. However, most people also don't see how hard he works to try and back up his pride-- what's the point of bragging if you can't do what you say you can?-- how lovingly protective he is of those who manage to win his affection-- despite being largely unable to do much to protect those people, though he'd try anyway-- and the rather hard life he's had to put up with, ever since early adolescence. He is not quite as talented as he wishes he was, a fact which he has had driven home to him more than once and in rather painful ways, but he wants to do the most that he can with what ability he has. One might say that what he lacks in talent, he makes up for with determination. His biggest failing would be refusing to admit that he can't do something that he has said he would do, even if he knows the task is beyond his skill, and trying to do it anyway. |
History: | Kienn's mother came from a very insular
clan of daemons, the Maker clan. Being a bit less docile and meek as she
was expected to be, she fell in love with, married, and conceived a
child with someone who her family completely detested: a human. When
she refused to leave him, and he refused to leave her, and both refused
to have the child aborted to preserve the purity of the Maker line, the
only choice left had to be taken: her parents hired a gene artisan. They
found the best one they could, in fact, for working on a half-human
fetus was tricky work. For the most part, they feel as if they got their
money's worth-- but young Kienn would never hear the end of it, for he
is expected to carry on the line properly, to make sure their hard work
was not wasted. Since Kienn has yet to have any inclination to
take a mate and raise children, especially considering he is still
young, that has been a point of contention with his extended family ever
since he was old enough to know what they meant when they said such
things.
Things eased up quite a bit once Tyrolean, Kienn's younger brother and also the half-human product of a gene artisan's work, was born. There were two heirs now. In addition to the profound gratitude for the new little furball's presence, Kienn found he liked the sweet child, and took it upon himself to make sure that none of the extended relatives treated him the way Kienn himself had been treated, as a commodity or a breeder. He put himself in the role of little Ty's protector, confidant, and playmate, a role neither half-daemon had any objection to. Since the family practice in their branch of the Maker clan was magery, both boys were sent to be trained as soon as they were both old enough. Luckily enough, they both had some small talent in the field, abilities which complemented each other perfectly. Unfortunately, the pressure to "do well" led to difficulties: either Kienn would alternately ruthlessly push himself to be better and better, and rebel by grumping and lazing about, not doing assignments and not trying at anything. Coupled with his own ambition, it led the confidence to try a very dangerous spell-- and a grave mistake. Tyrolean was not particularly gifted with controlling energy to make spells, but rather to gathering and storing the power; Kienn, on the other hand, struggled with power collection but was skilled in manipulation. So when it came time to fuel the spell that would turn an ordinary suit of armor into an animated golum, it was Kienn who tied Tyrolean to the magical framework-- and he who did it wrong. The spell took more power than Tyrolean had, so it started sucking at his life-energy and soul, and not even their master's quick intervention at the last minute could actually save his body. Ever since, Tyrolean has had to live with the spell's target, a suit of armor, for a body-- and Kienn has had to live with knowing he's the one who put him there. The whole bonding thing was, as usual, the family's idea: wouldn't it be grand for Kienn to be the first daemon to bond a dragon? Kienn, not particularly interested given that he's not particularly interested in dragons as a species, went along mostly for the opportunity to see Sanctuary and get away from said family for a while. Learning that even if he did bond he'd actually be the second daemon to bond a dragon, not the first, only made him less enthusiastic about the whole deal. That Tyrolean was interested in bonding was really the only reason he gave the meetings any thought at all. That he actually bonded-- to a cheerful, bouncy, young Fire dragon, no less-- actually shocked him. He still isn't sure what to do about it. |
