Description: | Most people on Pre'Mian-- or any other
world, for that matter-- wouldn't look at Jelinek and think him a
demon. He is perfectly mortal, if magical, and actually has a general
dislike for flame, destruction, and death. He can, however, shape-shift,
as many demons are reported to do, though not into anything other than
his natural form and a humanoid form.
Jelinek's preferred form, his natural form, is actually more like a dragon than a traditional, hell-born demon-- but don't let any Avengaean dragons hear that. Of natural creatures, one might compare him to some unholy cross between wolf and hyena. He is four-footed, powerfully built, and heavily muscled, with very pronounced shoulders and bulky hindquarters. He's covered in a thick, cured-leather-hard hide of dark brown, dappled over his neck, back, and tail with greenish gray that anyone trying to be uncharitable-- or just plain insulting-- might say looks like mold. Three vine-like tentacles, a similar moss-green, curl against his shoulders, rarely stirring in public but tending to get rather wild, as if they have minds of their own, if there isn't anyone to see them. His eyes, decidedly feline in his otherwise largely canine appearance, are a sharp amber, and highly reflective, more suited to darkness than light. In his other form, Jelinek looks largely human-- other than the gray-green hair, long and severely braided, and amber eyes, still reflective and night-adapted. He is tall and big, every bit as bulky as his four-footed form, and he is dark of skin, the same color dark brown as his four-footed form's hide-- though, even though no one ever sees his back, without the dappling. He wears a jumble of mismatched colors on a jumble of shabby clothes, most of the time, but if he wants to impress, he's been known to appear in rich robes of chestnut brown, with green and gold ivy embroidery. |
Personality: | Jelinek is grouchy and irritable, as
befits an old hermit demon, and is sure to chase away any young upstart
demon who happens to wander into his terrain. He has no love for his own
kind-- or any other kind, for that matter-- though he does have a quiet
kind of love for the things his magic is tied to: earth, stone, the
occasional plant that deigns to grow underground. Due to this, he is
impatient with other creatures, despite being ungodly patient with
anything else, like magic, hunting, or searching out information. He is
very scholarly, having spent most of his life in study and research of
rare, even off-world magical theory.
Despite being generally impossible to deal with, and well aware of the same, Jelinek isn't evil or cruel; he could probably be kind, in his own strange way, if he ever let anyone near enough to be kind to. However, he has a tendency to just not care: the rest of the world can go to hell, for all he cares, as long as it doesn't bother him, in the process. An interesting and sometimes amusing quirk about him is that, since he spends so much time alone, he has developed a tendency to talk to himself, even in the company of other people who might hear him; he simply doesn't notice, anymore. |
History: | It has been at least a century since Jelinek
saw the sun, and he rather prefers it that way. He hasn't run
with a pack since he as a pup, and he prefers it that way, too. Most
sentient species irritate him, so he spends most of his time with no one
but himself. He escaped from his disgusted mother as soon as he thought
he could survive; she hadn't wanted a boy-pup, anyway, and would
probably have eaten him eventually, before he actually came of age. Jelinek
found out much later that she'd done the same to the next
boy-pup she'd born who dared to thrive.
Since then, Jelinek has staked out a large territory deep below the least-desirous part of the Tuisk mountains, the northern-most branch that runs along the coast, is often investigated by die-hard demon-hunters, and is thoroughly infested with daemons and humans. He doesn't have many problems with any of them, living as far underground as he does, and it assures him that not many demons try to pester him. It hadn't taken him long to learn everything he could comfortably learn about Avengaea-- without having to come out into any kind of society, at least-- and he made a point to procure himself a pentagrammed item and a portal, so he could travel off-world, since he magic wasn't powerful enough for a teleport spell. The most recent world Jelinek discovered was Pre'Mian, which was so far removed from Avengaea as to be in a different dimension, all together. He did what reading he could, first, learning about current events and, discovering something called the Flight of the Dead, decided it was at least worth looking into. He could learn about undead things and necromancy, neither of which were prevalent on any world he'd yet visited. So he adjusted his portal, fired it up, and took himself to the Ring of Fire to see what was worth knowing there. |
Abilities: | First, like all Avengaean demons, Jelinek can shape-shift between his natural, largely canid form and a sometimes
more appropriate, humanoid form. Second, being an Earth demon, he has
powers tied to the earth: most specifically, he can encourage plant
growth to some degree, he can mold small amounts of stone like clay, and
he can glean information from the ground itself, as if it speaks to him.
Whether any actual voice he might hear from silent stone is actually
there, a subconscious manifestation of his magical connection to earth
in general, or largely a product of so long alone is impossible to tell.
Of course, being a scholar, Jelinek's best "ability" is his amassed knowledge: there is little in multiple worlds that he has not at least heard of. He is also highly intelligent, but he is also very slow, making him a poor debater and an even worse combatant. So, that bulky body of his is actually bulked out from moving stone around and travel, not combat: he has few battle skills at all, nor does he particularly want them. |
