Description: | Though Cohlin is twelve years old, going on thirteen, he doesn't look it. He is small and thin, with hollowed cheeks as if he's never quite gotten enough to eat, and most would guess him to be more like nine or ten than twelve or thirteen. His hair is thin and straight, slightly shaggy, and a dark, mousy brown in color, faded to blonde on a couple locks along his face, all of which he keeps tucked behind his ears and under the rest of his hair whenever he can. His eyes are dark, beneath dark brows, and he is fairly tanned from life in the jungles of the daemon isle of Katkina. His clothes are fine of cut and fabric, looking almost but not quite like a uniform, but they are all slightly worn, as if he has had the same wardrobe for a long time-- in fact, given the fact that his ankles stick out a little beneath the hem of his slacks, that is quite likely the case. |
Personality: | Cohlin, when he can be, is almost hermit-like in his need to be alone. This is not out of any dislike for people, though he hasn't had a life that leads him to be particularly friendly or charitable to other people; still, he can actually be quite compassionate, when he needs to be. Nor is it out of scholarly interests; Cohlin has little patience for learning and books, being a rather active boy. Rather, he finds the presence of other minds around him wearing, more so than even the strongest introvert, particularly if those other minds are stressed, distressed, angry, or any other strong negative emotions. Though he would love to actually have friends, he can't stand to be around people long enough to actually make any. |
Abilities: | Like most humans on Avengaea, Cohlin has no magical ability. Like a few, however, he does have some ability with psionics. Actually, he has a lot of ability with psionics, in potential, anyway. He is a natural telepath, both sending and receiving, and is an even more natural empath, with talent so strong that he simply can't help but feel the emotional state of everyone around him, often taking it on as his own. In times of stress, he can and has forced an emotion or mental state on another person in self-defense. However, he has next to no training and has been told all his life that he doesn't have any power of his own, so he is largely unaware of what he is doing. When he is aware that he's hearing things or feeling things that don't make any sense, he just worries that he's going mad. |
History: | Cohlin doesn't remember his parents. He was
a slave on the daemon isle of Katkina ever since he can remember, where
humans are sold as property for whatever purpose the buyer wishes for
them. His first household was terrible, where slaves, used mainly as
servants and pack animals, were regularly beaten and treated more like
beasts than thinking beings. He was, however, bought into a fairly
prosperous and fairly benevolent household at age eight, where he has
remained since, thankfully unlearning a great deal of what he learned
early on about people. At least these daemons and the bulk of their
other human slaves were kind.
Cohlin's gifts began to manifest when he was only nine, but even though his owners were kind, they also didn't believe that humans could possible have magical or psionic powers, which they attributed to essentially the same gift. So, Cohlin was told that he had an overactive imagination, or he had eaten something bad, or perhaps he was sick. Rumors went around for a while that he was simply crazy, but after the first time he heard those, Cohlin started keeping what he heard and felt a secret, as much as he could. The general thought never quite went away, but since being mildly ostracized meant he wouldn't have to spend as much time with people, Cohlin didn't mind too much. He could handle being lonely, right? When Cohlin was ten, the family who owned him got into a bit of trouble in local politics and had to escape the little kingdom and comfortable home they lived in. The bulk of the slaves were sold, sent off to masters who the daemon family trusted, but Cohlin somehow managed to stay with the people he knew. Just leaving the political border, however, didn't seem to be enough, for after a few months, they moved again, all the way across the Prape Ocean to the mainland of Novinitu. Over the course of the next year, the much-reduced household made it all the way to Sanctuary, where the Danui boys Catame and Daynoren noticed Cohlin's ability and brought him to the bonding complex in the hopes that, with so many trained minds about, he might find some relief. Besides, the classes would be good for him, and a bond might be even better. Cohlin doesn't know how well that will work, but he's willing to try it out, at least. |
