Description: | A tall, svelte cat, Marelyn is pitch black
from nose to tail-tip, excepting only a faint tracing of peach dappling
on her back, her golden eyes, and, in the very brightest of light, a red
tinge to the tips of her paws, ears, and tail and in lines around her
eyes. Someone very observant might note a few silver hairs here and
there, but those are usually groomed free as soon as she finds them. Her
mane is thin and sleek, her eyes narrow and angled, and her movements
both graceful and economical, precise and predatory. She is an
attractive feline, for those attracted to the four-footed, and she is
usually smiling, though that smile can mean anything-- or nothing at
all.
While on Star City, or anywhere not her homeworld, Marelyn has the ability to shape-shift into a human form. She is fairly tall, though not extremely so, with deep golden skin, a narrow, still feline-esque face, the same gold eyes, and a fall of thick, straight, black hair that comes nearly to her waist. Though her preference would be for exotic, desert-type clothing, she usually wears typical Kilandaian skirts and tunics. |
Personality: | It's rare to find someone who, upon getting
to know her, actually likes Marelyn Bagot. She is respected, even
admired, and there are certainly people who dislike her-- most
commonly just mistrust her-- but no one really likes her unless
she hasn't known them for long and has enough reason to make a
particular effort at being sweet and charming. At first blush, she comes
across well-- charming, smooth-talking, with a pleasant smile,
flattering commentary, and a graceful way of moving-- but when the
social mask comes off, she is difficult to get along with, being sharp
of tongue and wit, quick to point out shortcomings in others,
intimidating, and detached from others, never letting anyone
particularly close. She is difficult to trust because she is never
genuine, never completely honest, and never open about her own feelings.
If asked, and if she deigned to answer seriously, she might say she has
forgotten how to be genuine and open, but she doesn't think it matters
much, anyway: she thinks no one would believe her even if she were
completely honest, by now.
Marelyn isn't a bad person, really-- though not many people would call her a good person, either-- she's just a difficult one who sees too clearly and makes certain to point out at least some of the things she sees. When she thinks there is gain to be had, she will gladly insult someone into a rage-- or compliment them into complacency-- even if they are "friends". A friend, to Marelyn, is merely someone with whom she argues on a regular basis and who she respects enough to not insult too much, and only point out shortcomings that can be fixed. She almost enjoys riling other people up, friend or foe, and she is perversely proud of how well she pushes other people's buttons. No one has ever seemed to find her own buttons, however, for she cannot remember being angry for a very long time. Really, Marelyn is always nearly always smiling, whether in amusement, smugness, secrecy, or even sadness and disappointment. Her smile is her shield against the world. |
History: | Marelyn's past is about as sordid as they
come, among the goprin. Her mother was member of the royal line-- not a
major branch, but major enough that the family was well thought of, well
off, and very warm-colored; her mother herself had a completely red mane
and red paws-- and her father a commoner with no royal blood in him
anywhere-- colored, in fact, entirely in cool colors with a
smattering of peach-- just a step above human in the eyes of a noble
family. It was a scandal, when sheltered, spoiled, and naive Joserlyn
Bagot announced that she was in love with a commoner and going to have
his child, assuming it would be accepted and even welcomed. She was not,
to her devastation, and she was rather quickly made into an outcaste
among her own family. Shortly before the birth, Joserlyn's love vanished
in panic. Shortly after the birth, Joserlyn killed herself,
adding yet more scandal to an already juicy story. Worst of all, what
little of the royal red tiny Marelyn bore was visible only when she
shifted cat-formed, and even then only in very bright light because it
was so dark.
The Bagot family took the orphan in, raising her amongst luxury and privilege, but never let her forget that she was less than they and always would be. She was not allowed much contact with those of lesser rank, trotted out among other noble families as a show of how generous her family was to keep her safe, well-fed, and well-groomed despite the shame she represented and her difficult nature. Even young, she was prickly and prone to inciting arguments, even fights-- in fact, younger, she was much worse, with little care for tact or hiding behind pleasantries. She was unhappy, and everyone around her was going to know it. When she hit adolescence, Marelyn slowly learned the benefits of being pretty, flattering, and demure in addition to being intelligent, and she lost some of her reputation for being the child of a demon instead of a commoner. She learned to be charming, how to smile at insults, how to listen without appearing to, and how to be overlooked or accepted as she needed to. Before long, she knew so many of the nobility's dirty secrets that her disillusionment was complete: bitterness, neglect, and disgust sent her, on her twentieth birthday, to the wild and her cat form. Very few people missed her, and none of them were her family. For several years she drifted, learning to look after herself and putting her skills of observation to use in tracking and hunting game to eat. After being a part of the goprin nobility, however, she found that being alone with nature not to her liking. It took her over a decade after that realization to be accepted into the secret of a "wild" village, and another couple years past that to actually be invited to join it. Since then she has been invaluable, but always not entirely trusted, because though she is social she is still not honest, and she is still difficult. By then, it was habit, what she was most comfortable with, and simply easier. No one in the village knows where she came from, or that she has royal blood-- hiding it, after all, is far too easy. |
Abilities: | While on her home planet, Marelyn's
abilities are limited and mundane, though varied. She is an excellent
and patient huntress, with a good memory and an eye for detail to
organize other village hunters and not over-hunt any particular area.
She is adaptable and quick-thinking, smooth-talking and smiling, and
very good at diplomacy, flattery, and shmoozing when she wants to be.
Though she is admittedly a bit out of practice, she is as excellent a
spy as she is a hunter.
When off her home planet, however, Marelyn can shift forms into a human shape and use magic controlled by speech in an old language. She loves her human form as much as her cat form and shifts often while away, and is a subtle and clever mage rather than a powerful one. |
