Personality: | For a xenodragon, Bristaness isn't really a
bad fellow. He isn't violent, temperamental, vicious, or even mean; the
closest to "evil" he gets is when he obeys his queen and
warrior-brother to keep out of their more violent affairs. Though
he is intensely loyal to and protective of his young and somewhat
inexperienced queen, he will protect her with words far more than
actions, and peaceful actions far more than violent ones. He has even
been known to stand between the queen he serves and people he likes or
respects, to keep her from killing them.
Despite his blood and culture, Bristaness has an internalized moral code he follows, and is a strong, if somewhat private, believer of compassion and asking questions before attacking. He is also intelligent, with a subtle sense of humor that can be hard to catch because it often manifests with utter lack of expression, and knows when to pick his battles and when to stand down and let himself be overruled. For a low-ranked drone, he has more will-power and presence of mind than most would think, he just keeps it to himself because he doesn't want to be higher-ranked. He doesn't like having a lot of authority, or responsibility, not really trusting himself with such things. Life is simply easier when he's being ordered around, or being ignored, or being forgotten. |
History: | Bristaness isn't your typical xenodragon in
many ways. His personality is one way, for he is fairly gentle,
particularly for his species. His lack of a proper hive, for it was
largely destroyed when the small moon they'd taken up residence on fell
under the mindless attack of a field of asteroids. Only four escaped on
the asteroids, themselves: their youngest queen Ampvess, her most
faithful warrior Charliss, and a pair of drones, Bristaness and an even
lower-ranked white named Proquess. They invaded the very first ship they
came across, killing everyone on board, but couldn't figure out how to
actually make the ship move, and so were trapped on board while it
drifted.
When the ship's automatic distress call finally brought help, that help was prepared. Ampvess and Charliss were captured using magic, Proquess hid away deep in the useless ship and was left behind, and Bristaness, secretive and silent, managed to sneak aboard the departing vessel to follow the only family he had left. That escape led to several years aboard a space station, during which he hid, scavenging when he could and learning about the station itself, their chances of escape, and the people aboard the station. Freedom finally arrived in the form of a rebellious young mage who managed to free Ampvess, setting the queen on a killing rampage across the station to free her warrior and escape with the human in tow. Of the three xenodragons, Bristaness trusts the mage-girl the least, and is the closest to understanding her plans, her ruthlessness, and her true hold over his queen. As of yet, he doesn't know what to do about it aside from continual warnings-- which tend to annoy Ampvess and do nothing more than amuse Charliss-- and exploration of the much larger space station he and his miniature hive visited, and only he is safe to actually wander, because the others are wanted for killing someone there. |
Abilities: | Bristaness is good at hiding. No one really knows why or how, but he's good enough to have avoided detection on a space station far smaller than Star City for a number of years, searching for a way to free the remnants of his hive. Part of this might be the utter silence of his movements, the disciplined stillness of his mind, his shadowy coloring, or even his seemingly supernatural observational skills. Otherwise, he has no magical abilities and only the average psionic abilities for his species, and the standard xenomorphic abilities of wall-crawling, acidic blood, and mindstream communication. |
